"The whole experience was very professional”

Our custom walnut bow lamp is prefect for our modern home. The clean simple lines are stunning plus it provides the light we needed to be able to read the newspaper or a book on our big comfy sectional. The lamp was delivered to our home and setup. Whole experience was very professional.

“with attention to detail that I hadn't even considered.”

I had Mike at Kurva Designs make a built in bed for our new house. I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted but showed him a few photos of the ideas I had. Mike was able to come up with a design that was perfect. He built the bed with attention to details that I hadn't even considered such as height of the built in side tables and electrical etc. The bed is exactly what I wanted and is working out beautifully.

“We are very happy with our Bow Lamp”

We are very happy with our bow lamp from Mike at Kurva Design. The lamp looks exactly as it did in the picture which spurred us to buy the lamp. Since it is made to order, Mike kept us in the loop on the progress during the build phase and even sent us some pictures, which was a pleasant surprise. Mike was very conscientious in the delivery ensuring that the courier was able to deliver when it was convenient to us and in packaging the lamp to ensure there was no chance of breakage. Overall we are giving Mike five stars as he delivered exactly what he said he would, at the price quoted, and ahead of schedule.

“that brings style and functionality....”

Mike of Kurva Design built us a wonderful bench that brings style and functionality to our front hall. We searched widely for a piece that looked great and could withstand the rigors of use by a family of four that includes two young children, and we found it in Mike's spalted maple bench. Fashioned of solid maple and walnut, the bench features a live edge on the seat and is very well finished and easy to care for. Visitors to our home often compliment us on it. We’ll definitely be commissioning additional work from Kurva Design.

The Curve

(YAM magazine Mar/Apr 2017 p.17)

To really push the boundaries of design, Victoria-based furniture maker Mike Randall of Curve Design is drawn to lighting. "It can be functional art," Randall says. "I want things to look as good when they're not in use as when they are. A standard floor lamp doesn't add anything to the room but light - my pieces aim to do more" His Bow Lamp, which was featured on the Prototype Stage at IDSWest 2015, is a  slender wooden sculpture. Like all of Randall's pieces, models are made from North American maple and oak with eco-conscious finishes. As a graduate of the Fine Furniture program at Camosun College, Randall credits his time there with influencing his style. "My father was an antique dealer," Randall says,"and I've always liked furniture, but when [Camosun College program leader and instructor] Ken Guenter, who gave a whole series of lectures on art history, got to the section on mid-century modernists, my whole way of thinking exploded." Kurva means to ben or arc in Swedish, and the name also reflects Randall's love of simple, clean, modern lines.

Turn for the better

(Six Spectacular Light Fixtures....... Globe and Mail Oct 7 2015)

Kurva is Swedish for bend – Victoria’s Mike Randall named his design house to signal his love for both Scandinavian style and curvaceous forms. It’s no surprise, then, that his new Bow Light is defined by a serious arc: The technique he uses to bend the bleached maple it’s made from is the same one used to create a long bow. Its plywood base is covered in ebonized white oak veneer, while an LED strip is embedded into the top third of the extra-tall floor light that’s specially designed for rooms with high ceilings.
